Plant structure is low with dark green leaves. Ratio of plant structure to fruiting is very good. Fruit production showed early yield higher than Festival and consistent throughout the season. Fruit size much larger than Festival, attractive, short conical shape and bright red in colour. Less resistance to bruising and abrasion compared to Rubygem or Festival and needs to be handled carefully. Very juicy, sweet and flavour/consumer acceptability is good. Plants do not like very wet conditions as it increases susceptibility to diseases.
Released 2002. Fruit production is very early, earlier than Rubygem and continues throughout the season. Fruit is attractive glossy red, slightly firmer than Chandler, conical, medium-sized, with resistance to rain damage. Fruit will soften if over-fertilized. Well displayed and easily harvested, although some smalls similar to Kabarla may occur. For best flavour and sweetness, pick when fully ripe.
The major variety grown in Queensland. Fruit production commences later than Rubygem and continues throughout the season. Flesh is bright red with good flavour. Fruit is firm, attractive, conical to pointy edge but flavourful under a range of weather conditions. Very tolerant to rain damage. As with Camarosa, flavour will be best when harvested fully mature. Fruit are well displayed on long pedicels . Although some smalls may occur, Festival produces very few misshapen or unmarketable fruit. Fruit will not go soft if left on the plant for a few days before picking . Fruit are well presented which makes picking and packing a breeze.
A short day cultivar. An open plant with long pedicels, making it very easy to harvest. Fruit is firm yet juicy, and colour is glossy, bright to dark-red with a warm-red interior and smooth appearance. Fruit are mostly conical in shape, with some early season fruit being elongated. The berry weighs between 21 and 23g, slightly heavier than Festival. Fruit production starts slightly earlier than Festival and peaks at different times to Festival. The plant requires more fertilizer than Festival early to obtain good bush size as it produces flowers very soon after planting. Plant structure to fruit ratio is very good. Plants are not usually supplied before 1stApril as early harvest of immature plants can increase susceptibility to crown rot.
A day-neutral variety and forms a medium dense, highly productive plant. Fruit is uniformly conical, red in colour, large and very glossy all season. Flesh is light red throughout. Higher production than Selva but fruit can be soft if the correct nutritional program is not followed. In frost-free regions, with the right care Lowanna will produce fruit almost all year round.
Fruit is large and one of the sweetest strawberries in Australia. Can be as early as Kabarla and produces high yields throughout the season. Softer, more tender and a little lighter in colour than Californian varieties. Texture is similar to Chandler. Resists rain damage. Fruit are well displayed and easily harvested. This variety has excellent consumer acceptability and is always very popular for local sales.
A very popular variety in QLD. Fruit production commences very early, and continues throughout the season. Fruit is attractive, exceptional flavour, uniformly shaped, moderately dark red, glossy, short conical to slightly wedged, medium to large sized (20g), firm and resilient, with resistance to rain damage. Flesh is dark red, of medium acidity and consistently good flavour. Fruit are well displayed as pedicels extend out of the canopy, and easily harvested. Calyx is quite large and some petal retention may occur. Growers need to be aware that blotchy ripening can occur in wet weather if nutritional balance is not correct (Example: Nitrogen, Calcium and Potassium).
A mid-season variety. Fruit production commences in early June. Fruit are exceptionally attractive red, glossy, conical, L to XL sized (20g), firm and resilient, with resistance to rain damage. Flesh is bright red, of low acidity, and excellent sweet flavour. Fruit are well displayed, and easily harvested. Eating quality is exceptionally high. Sugarbaby received the highest score in the Better Berries Field Day taste tests at Redlands in July 2003. Well suited to local niche market sales.
The plant has upright structure with pedicels extending outside the canopy for ease of picking. This variety can be a large plant especially if too much nitrogen is applied. Flower and fruit set starts early and production is consistent throughout the season. Fruit tend to be conical in shape, and tend to produce high yield. Fruit size is large to extra large and red to deep warm red in colour and need to be picked when fully ripe to ensure the base is not still green or unripe. Less resistance to bruising and abrasion than Festival or Rubygem and care must be exercised when handling the berries. Fruit flavor and consumer acceptability is still to be established.
